Résumé :
As in many peri-Mediterranean upland areas used for livestock farming, the region of Les Causses has been progressively overgrown with woody plant species. This ancestral agro-pastoral landscape, listed by Unesco, is slowly disappearing along with a significant number of native species. The ecological analysis of landscape dynamics shows that grazing alone fails to prevent this land from being overgrown with woody plant species (such as pine, juniper, box). A historical analysis confirms this trend: up until the 19th century, this land was essentially used for growing cereal crops. Since the emergence of intensive agriculture, sheep farming has developed, but the use of rough grazing land is too irregular to prevent woody species from spreading. Management of rough grazing land in Les Causses must integrate new landscape and ecological objectives. Technical solutions must be worked out based on practical, technical and theoretical skills and experience.
